I just keep learning something new at every class. I never knew about the word listicle. I was totally confused when our professor brought up listicles…”Um..what? (valley girl voice)”. When I found out what they were I realized that I am in fact a listicle LOVER. The lists attract me because it is an idea that has been simplified into a list, and who doesn’t like simple? You could find listicles in magazines, (5 things Jennifer Lopez Does to Stay in Shape), or you can find them online on buzzfeed or cracked, heck I always see them posted on Facebook. I found out that there are 3 types of listicles:
- Ranked: Listicles with qualitative judgement about the value of the items. They are usually listed from worst to best, or to most interesting, or most delicious. The number 1 thing in the countdown is usually last in the order.
- Thematic: These are listicles that were created with a theme of interest without having a specific order. The topics are presented in random orders.
- Random: Random listicles lack in both theme or ranking. The reader draws their own conclusions from the different facts. This may be one that would leave a reader pissed off because of the lack of conclusions.
I’ve attempted to find examples of each type of listicle. This first one is a ranked listicle:
This listicle is ranking the characters in Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video by fierceness.
The listicle is ranked from least fierce (#18) to the fiercest of them all (#1). Not even Taylor Swift herself was ranked #1. There aren’t any negative captions in this listicle. Each description under the pictures simply state why they are “fierce”. I would think that this was based off of someones opinion. It would have been cool if it was based off of an online pole where people voted who they thought was the fiercest person in the “Bad Blood” music video.
For a thematic Listical I chose…
(I apologize to the non-pumpkin lovin’ people)
The theme of this listicle is pumpkin recipes. The list of pumpkin recipes does not have a ranking. The recipes aren’t listed in a specific order and are all of the same value. None of the recipes are said to be the best of the bunch or the worst.
I wasn’t sure what would be a good example for a random listicle, but I found….
Now that I think about it, this listicle might have defeated the purpose (random listicle) because I guess it has a theme (Starbucks). I’m not even sure what the purpose of this listicle is which is why in my opinion it would be a random listicle.
Well, there you have it. I tried to find examples of the three types of listicles to the best of my abilities and I hope you were all able to follow along. I like looking at them…not necessarily looking for them.
I’d like to see the types of listicles you guys have found or created!
